If you were born today, where would you be born? A data-driven simulation of your country, family and whole life.

About the game

If you were born today, where would it be? Over a hundred million babies are born every year, and one in six of them is born in India. One in 8 Billion draws your birthplace from real-world statistics, then fast-forwards through a whole life on a floating-island stage.

Your country, region, city or village, ethnic group, sex and family wealth are all decided by probability. The rest of your life — school, work, moving away, how long you live — is simulated from that country's real data too.

How to play

• Random birth: a draw weighted by each country's annual births shows where you'd be born.
• Choose your start: pick the country, region, urban or rural, ethnic group, sex, family class and birth year (1900 to today).
• Life playback: 0.5× to 10× speed, automatic pauses for big events, and a timeline you can scrub.
• Life choices mode: decide at the crossroads — school, leaving home, going abroad, marriage, children, starting a business — and at the end, change a past choice and live again from there.
• Family line: be born again as your own child and watch the family tree grow generation by generation.

What's inside

• Income distribution, life expectancy, child mortality, education, marriage, fertility and migration data for about 120 countries.
• Travel through time: income, lifespan, electricity and the internet change by era, and lives meet wars, famines, pandemics, economic crises and the pop culture of their day.
• Life summary: lifespan, cause of death, education, job, your lifetime global income rank, and a comparison with babies born the same day.
• Every life has a seed, so you can share a link and friends see the same life; Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean.

Tips

• Play a few fully random lives first, then use Choose your start to compare a poor family with the top 1% in the same country — the gap is striking.
• Play the same country with birth years 1920 and 2000 to see a century of change.
• In Life choices mode, following the original path gives exactly the same life; change one choice to see what that decision really did.

Free and full versions

Every feature is free. The free version lets you start 5 new lives a day (replaying past lives doesn't count) and shows ads. The one-time Unlimited & No Ads purchase removes the daily limit and the ads.

Behind the scenes

Every event in a life is worked out the moment you are born; playback only reveals it. Mortality uses each country's age-based death tables multiplied by personal risk (poverty, job, war and so on), calibrated country by country so the simulated average lifespan stays close to the real figure. The same seed gives the same life in all four languages.
