Creep up quietly, wait for little animals to do something cute, and sketch it into your book — a gouache-style nature game.

About the game

Critter Sketchbook is a gouache-style nature-watching game. Take your sketchbook into a meadow, a canyon and a campsite, creep quietly up to little animals, wait for them to do something charming and capture that moment on paper.

Animals notice you: step too loudly or get too close and they'll look around, hide or run. Hide in tall grass, tiptoe and be patient to sketch the best moments.

How to play

• Move closer to the animals and hold Shift to tiptoe more quietly; the “…”, “?” and “!” above an animal show how alert it is.
• Hold to sketch: the frame drifts with your hand, so keep the animal inside it, then let go at the best moment.
• Stars come from framing, timing and distance; sketching the same behaviour with a better score replaces the old one.
• Scatter seeds (E) to attract birds, and light your lamp (F) at night to draw moths.

What's inside

• 6 critters and 18 behaviours: rabbit, hen, lizard, quail, moth and toad.
• 6 rare moments — a happy rabbit binky, a hen with her chicks, two lizards facing off on one rock, a covey of quail bursting into flight and more — for 24 entries and 72 stars in total.
• 3 areas — meadow, desert canyon and dusk campsite — unlocked after 4 and 9 sketches.
• A 6-page illustrated guide; Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean, on desktop and on phones in portrait or landscape.

Tips

• Get into tall grass before you approach — it greatly lowers your chance of being spotted.
• Rare behaviours only appear once an animal has been relaxed for a while, so wait before you start sketching.
• Light the lamp at camp: once moths gather, a toad will pop out to snap them up.
• Quail move as a group — circle slowly around the side instead of walking into the covey.

Free and full versions

The web version is free to play, and your sketches are saved in your browser.

Behind the scenes

The whole world shares one gouache material: colours are softened with a painterly filter and layered with paper grain, and shadow edges get noise so they bleed like a brush. The critters are deliberately low-poly so light falls on distinct facets, as if painted in blocks of colour.
